Ive had my first job since late March, so about three and a half - TopicsExpress

Ive had my first job since late March, so about three and a half months now, and Ive already learned so much and gained quite a bit of experience from it. Ive learned how to deal with the public and Ive learned to be as nice as possible but to also be assertive and never let anyone run over me; yes, I am a cashier and its my job to be nice to you and ring your things up, but Im also a human and Im not going to be ran over. Having people of all ages, races, genders, etc. be rude to me has taught me how to deal with all different types of people and situations. Ive learned that there are some truly disgusting, hateful people in the world but that there are also some pretty great ones. Ive learned that some people just werent raised to be respectful and that sometimes its best to just ignore them. Ive learned that there are always going to be some unfair things in the workplace but that you cant let it bother you, as long as you, yourself, work as hard as you can. My job has also taught me how to take control of situations and work towards solutions to any problems that arise. Its brought me out of my shell so much and Im a lot less shy than I was when I started. Its allowed me to make some amazing friends and also meet a few wonderful, interesting people. Its taught me that you cant let tiny things ruin your day but you can let the small things make it. Things as simple as a compliment, a tip, or a nice conversation have come to mean so much to me. :) Ive learned that people love to make jokes that arent funny in the slightest but that its polite to laugh anyway. My personal favorite: it wont scan so it must be free HAHAHA. -.- Ive learned that the majority of people who have debit/credit/ebt cards dont know how to use them and that its completely my fault that theyre uneducated about their method of payment and that even though I hold up my line to walk them through the process, theyre still going to blame me. And its also my fault that the machine asks so many questions. Just use cash if its that big of a hassle. Ive learned that its incredibly difficult for people to follow simple instructions. Ive also come to realize that its MY fault when someone doesnt have enough money to pay for the things that THEY picked out to buy. Ive learned that a lot of people honestly seem to think that I make up or care about the prices of whatever theyre buying; I dont come up with the prices nor do I care, so dont complain about them to me. Ive learned that people, for some reason, think that theyre above having to wait in line: its a grocery store, princess. Youre going to have to wait for a minute or two. I had to rant for a minute, but back on a more positive note: My job has taught me is how to be independent and manage my own money, and I think those are two extremely important things to know in life. I got this job so I could help put myself through college and Im happy Ive gained the experience I have in this short amount of time. Ive learned to work hard for anything and everything you want or need in life and Ive definitely learned the value of a dollar.
