Ive never been as enamored of Darren Aronofsky as some film people - TopicsExpress

Ive never been as enamored of Darren Aronofsky as some film people I know, but Im pretty sure before he made Noah he watched Princess Mononoke and thought to himself, How can I make that movie in my native culture, but without all the warmth, nuance and creativity? I read a review that said Emma Watson was terrible (as always,) which I thought was a little unfair to the former Miss Granger, but yeah shes bad. Shes very very bad. But experienced and talented Jennifer Connelly is no better. Ray Winstone and Russell Crowe both salvage some moments by the skin of their teeth, whilst heavily chewing on the cheap looking scenery. Its hard to blame any of them however, as they all are forced to muddle there way through dialogue which is an uneasy patchwork of the Old Testaments greatest hits and bone dry additions hovering a few feet above James Cameron territory. The biggest problems are conceptual, however. For a film that seems to have had a lot of thought put into it, its not that well thought out a film. Aronofsky goes to great length to solve some of the viability problems associated with the story by having stone giants construct the ark, the animals herd themselves in, and having Noah and his wife put them into deep sleep by fanning them with pot smoke (the Noah family seems to have smoked up a resistance as it doesnt affect them, Noah also uses hyper-hallucinogenics to facilitate one of his prophecies.) Having dispensed with the pesky logistics, Aronofsky spends most of the rest of the running time pondering the morality of genocide. Yes, Noah is a genocidal maniac, but he struggles with and is haunted by his deeds, so like Jack Bauer and Kathryn Bigelows torturers hes actually the real victim. I do look forward to the incest infused sequel, in which Hermiones twins start repopulating the earth with their uncles, once they reach childbearing age. Substantially less laughs than the trailer. https://youtube/watch?v=_OSaJE2rqxU
