Ive never had much of an issue with this series using CGI until this episode. The battlefield scenes are just sooooooooo bland and flaccid compared to the Battle of Helms Deep and Pelennor Fields in LotR. But thanks to nostalgia goggles I still cried like a babby whenever some variant of The Shire and/or Hobbits (linked) is played a million times during the marathon though so theres that. Other gripes include: 1. Some abhorrent thematic dissonance at the end of the film; 2. The ending itself is terrible - devoid of closure; 3. Puts a bit too much emphasis on how it ties to LotR; 4. The Dol Guldur chapter starts with THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER and then rapidly dissolves to an absolute cringefest by the end. The subtlety of magic and power in Tolkien mythology is utterly butchered, which is to be expected because its just not possible to convey the literatures concept of magic onscreen, but good god the CG effects used are just so bad; 5. The camera shots are really unpleasant in this, I cant put my finger on an exact reason, but this particular movies camerawork and editing just isnt up to par with the rest of the saga. (The Dol Guldur chapter is especially bad) NOT A BAD FILM THOUGH!! The good parts, not mentioned here cuz spoilers, are pretty damn good, its really fun if youre not as much of a Tolkien nerd as I am. I just expected more from this one as its not only the conclusion to the trilogy, but very likely to be the last film ever from a literature and film series that has been a very important part of my life. p/s - LEGOLAS, SMAUG, ELROND AND SARUMAN THOUGH HOLY CRAP SO COOL p/p/s - Desolation of Smaug is actually not as boring as I remembered! p/p/p/s - Marathoned the trilogy at GSC with a mild hangover. Protip: Dont marathon with hangover.
