Ive posted Ilex X Calina before and post it again with this fine January 11 berry show. This variety came to SFA as a part of a cutting expedition to Strybing Arboretum way back when I would load a truck with coolers, bags, and snips and never come back until I was thinking of sending my luggage home by bus. A purported hybrid of I. cornuta X I. aquifolium, named in 1938 and the name is a contraction of Carolina. Touted then as heat tolerant and hardy to Zone 7, its proven itself in East Texas. Never blinked in the long string of 100 plus temperatures of 2010 and 2011. Blessed with large persistent bright red berries, the bush reaches 20 or more in a few decades. These are a line at my farm east of Nacogdoches, TX.
