Ive seen a lot of people post a link this week to the story about Dunkin Donuts plans to offer almond milk (likely for an additional charge) to its customers who want it. Some vegans are calling it a victory for animals or a victory for the cows. Seriously? Is this actually about enacting meaningful long-term change for other animals, or merely making life more convenient for vegans? And how about its being a victory for Dunkin Donuts? If someone refuses to consume dairy and for some reason has no choice but to obtain a coffee at this huge chain, that person will simply not get dairy. Its not the end of the world to drink black coffee. If they really want an alternative, theyll go someplace else -- MAYBE even to a local coffee shop. Or maybe theyll just buy their own organic/free trade coffee and carry a mug around and spare the world a bit of garbage. Some have been arguing that the almond milk alternative might lead the curious to switch from dairy to almond. Ive lost track of how many times Ive either dined or had coffee with friends, family, dates and acquaintances and weve gone someplace with vegan alternatives. Almost 100% of the time (unless out of deference to me), those folks have always reached for the cows milk, ordered the meat/cheese dishes, etc. Not to mention that none of Dunkin Donuts donuts (or other food, as far as I know) are vegan-friendly either. So basically, now vegans get to enjoy the convenience of plopping almond milk into coffee they purchase from a large chain which uses unethically-sourced coffee beans and sells food which is made up of animal products -- and we may even get charged extra for the great privilege, plunking additional money into Dunkin Donuts coffers as DD continues to exploit animals to serve them up to the general public. This isnt a victory for cows. This is a victory for Dunkin Donuts. Think about it.
