I’m 19 and a half again soon, so it’s time for 20 Happy Birthday Choices for 20’s 9. Focus, don’t rush in a hustle and bustle mindless rat race for money. We all know the economy is the worst since the unmentionable 1929 Great Depression ego driven party platforms and no compromise for progress so it’s called congress with high unemployment, only minimum wage jobs, many foreclosures, fragile stock market, incredible deficit, third parties control our profession with third world health care outcomes, and no business loans because you over borrowed $400,000 education loans to survive dental school that are now due killing any lifestyle American dream. Common sense would dictate that it would be foolish not to focus on money no matter what oath you swore to graduate and get licensed. Money is your immediate survival focus. Unfortunately when money is #1, ethics disappears because we are always on the go, looking for the next thing to do for any hint of money. While we are doing one thing for money, we are thinking about doing something else for money. Money without ethics easily distracts us away from the current task at hand. Money presents many shades of gray. Ethics is either black or white. When you choose to engage yourself in one thing, you need to take the time to focus on that and only that. Focusing on one thing is quite difficult, but it is more than worth it if for a higher purpose than money. Sure, multitasking can be a useful skill, but you most likely will end up chasing money with worse results half done. If you are talking to a patient and are easily distracted or rush from chair to chair on roller skates every 2 minutes for money, you only proved you don’t care. People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. Take the time to prove you care. Carpenters think lumber is so valuable, they measure twice and cut once. Patients are so valuable, doctors need to stop being faster, cheaper, superficial, two dimensional, intellectual, cause’n’effect, techno-economical production machines and start taking the time to care to be affordable excellence, sincere, three dimensional depth empathy, passionate, Hippocratic selfless, excellence, trustworthy philosopher, socio-emotional patient-doctor relationship partnership based on T.L.C. Trust, Likeability, Caring benefit for a higher purpose than money. Prove you are T.L.C. creating a spontaneous patient “W.O.W!” for your Willingness Of Wonderfulness. If you can dream it, then you can achieve it.” Zig Ziglar That’s true ethics. Take care of your patients, and they will take care of you.
