I’ve seen lawmakers motivated to block or undo citizen ballot measures on cockfighting, captive hunts, spring bear hunting, trapping with cruel devices, puppy mills, and other animal welfare reforms. I’ve also seen lawmakers try to deny voting rights by not allowing animal issues to be considered on the ballot, by simply forbidding animal issues to appear on the ballot. But I’ve not seen anything quite like the sustained legislative attack on wolves and on voters in Michigan, where some lawmakers are trying to undo not one but two voter-qualified referendums set to appear on the November ballot. Michigan’s opinion leaders in the press have cried foul on this assault on voting rights, and so, too, has our growing coalition of citizens and organizations trying to take back the government and to stop this hijacking of the voting process.
