J.M.s Bed and Breakfast in Cerro Pelon, Mexico near the Monarch Biosphere Reserve has a small slideshow of photos from the area. According to owners Ellen Sharp and Joel Moreno, When people take larger organized tours to see butterflies, very little of the money spent reaches the ejidos who had their communal lands taken to create the Biosphere Reserve. Tourism infrastructure and other kinds of economic development have for the most part been severely neglected in these adjacent areas, which means that these peasant communities continue to log on the reserve because they have no other economic options. We have opened a small B&B in Macheros, right at the entry of the Cerro Pelon reserve, and we also offer tours to other nearby reserves, including El Rosario, Sierra Chinchua and Piedra Herrada. Were hoping that if we can attract more tourists to spend more time and more money directly in the ejido (which is also an incredibly beautiful place), we can convince our neighbors that preserving the butterfly habitat is in their best interests.
