JACK WARNER once said John Jeremie was one of the best AG, read the No Confidence Motion the Law Association passed against Jeremie, yet he didnt resign. Attorney General John Jeremie has been severely censured by members of the learned Bar, who, at a specially convened meeting yesterday at the Hall of Justice, Port of Spain, considered and passed a no-confidence motion against him. At the meeting, which was called by the Law Association following a request from its members, 16 attorneys spoke on the motion. According to sources, opinion was evenly divided. But after a two-hour debate, when the vote was taken, Jeremie was tried by a jury of his peers and found wanting. The motion had three items, all of which were voted on, separately, and supported by the majority of members. • Item A condemned in the strongest manner the reported attempts by the Honourable Senator John Jeremie to improperly and illegally interfere with criminal prosecutions for political purposes. That was carried by a vote of 121 for/67 against. • Item B condemned in the strongest manner the reported attempts by Jeremie to undermine and threaten the constitutional independence of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. That was carried 127 for /59 against • Item C that it (the Law Association) has absolutely no confidence in the Honourable Senator John Jeremie as Attorney General and as titular Head of the Bar of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, was carried by a vote of 106 for/82 against. Law Association president Martin Daly, talking to reporters afterward, stressed that the association had no position on Jeremie until this minute (when its membership voted on the motion). Stressing that the Council of the Law Association was completely neutral and allowed members to express themselves, Daly stated: Now that members have expressed themselves, this represents the views of the Law Association. He added: The Council is bound by any resolution of its members passed in general meeting. It means, he conceded, that the Law Association now has no confidence in the Attorney General. [EXPRESS ]
