JAMAICA MINISTRY OF LABOUR GRANTED 3300 WORK PERMIT TO FOREIGNERS IN 2012 RANGING FROM 3 MONTHS TO 3 YEARS BUT MOST WERE FOR BETWEEN 6 AND 12 MONTHS IN THE COUNTRY The Ministry of Labour granted just over 3,300 foreigners permits to work in the island last year. This represented an increase (6.2 per cent) above the number of work permits issued in 2011. According to data provided in the 2012 Economic and Social Survey of Jamaica, the vast majority of persons applying for work permits last year were men (76 per cent) with most persons wanting to work in Jamaica for between six and 12 months. Work permits are issued locally for persons to be employed for periods ranging from less than three months to three years. The category wholesale and retail repair of motor vehicle and equipment accounted for most of the work permits issued followed by hotel and restaurant services. Persons seeking to obtain a work permit in Jamaica are required to make an application to the Ministry of Labour through their prospective employer, contractor, JAMPRO or through legal representation. The law requires that documentation be submitted to the labour ministry showing the steps taken by the organisation to employ Jamaicans with the requisite qualifications before hiring any foreigner. Applicants are required to pay an application fee of $14,400 plus a work permit fee of between $27,000 and $108,000. |
