JAMES “JIM” BOWMAN, 63, of Washington Court House, Ohio, departed this world on Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at 4:45 a.m. at his residence after a courageous battle with cancer. Jim was born August 26, 1950, in Hillsboro, OH to James and Gladys (Stout) Bowman. He was a 1968 graduate of White Oak High School, Mowrystown, OH, and received his BA and M.Ed. from the University of Cincinnati and post graduate studies at the Ohio State University. Jim was a teacher and a guidance counselor for 35 years. During his career he was employed by Ohio Valley, Bright Local and Blanchester School Districts, and the Laurel Oaks Campus for the Great Oaks Career and Technology Center. Jim had worked as an adjunct professor for the University of Dayton and Wright State University. He was also involved with Habitat for Humanity, Gideon’s International, and the Emmaus Ministry. Jim loved music and worked with church and community choirs at Winchester CCCU and Heritage Memorial Church. Jim gave 25 years to working with teens at church camps, retreats, and youth leader. He loved singing with the Heritage Worship Team, solos, duets, and with children. Jim served in many positions at Heritage Memorial church, but another love was for the Hospitality Ministry. Jim never met a stranger and made all feel welcomed and loved at Heritage. He was preceded in death by both his parents, Gladys and James Bowman, and a nephew, Stephen Tomlin. Jim is survived by his wife Connie (Bailey) Bowman whom he married on July 1, 1978. Also surviving are sisters, Kathy (Rev. Lee) Stanley, Karen Tomlin and Lois (Mark) Taylor and one brother Keith Bowman; nephews Brian Tomlin, Aaron (Chera) Duvall, Andrew (Lillian) Miller and Stephen Miller; nieces Julie (Brad) Aleshire, Jennifer (David) West, Heather Jo Duvall and Patricia Miller, along with several great nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends. Visitation will be held at Heritage Memorial Church, 1867 Old US Hwy 35 NW, Washington CH, OH 43160 on Sunday, June 8, 2014 from 2:00–7:00p.m. A Celebration of Jim’s Life will be held on Monday, June 9, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at Heritage Memorial Church with Rev. Joseph Duvall and Rev. Bruce Morrison officiating. The Interment Service will be held on Monday at the Sugar Tree Ridge Cemetery on State Route 136, Sugar Tree Ridge, OH (Highland County) at 4:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to James R. and Connie L. Bowman Scholarship Fund, Ohio Christian University, 1476 Lancaster Pike, Circleville, OH 43113. Arrangements are under the direction of the Summers Funeral Home.
