JASPER COUNTY SUN Here’s what’s happening at the school district The Jasper County School Districts principals share their thoughts on the school year: Hardeeville Elementary School (Principal Wanda Bostick): Hardeeville Elementary School hosted three members from our local community to serve as Principal for A Day. Our participants were SSG Paul Holmes from the S.C. National Guard, Christopher Bowman from South State Bank and Carly Grubbs from the United Way of the Lowcountry. Each participant received an insight and hands on experience serving as the instructional leader of the school. Our students were excited and had lots of comments and questions for each new principal. Principal for a Day was done as part of the districts recognition of American Education Week. Also, in recognition of American Education Week, we invited parents to come into the school to shadow their children for a day. Parents were able to visit their childrens classes and participate in the lessons. We were excited that on Dec. 11 we had a graduation ceremony for our Hardeeville Elementary School Parenting Center Leadership Academy First Cohort. Our parents have worked hard for eight weeks learning skills and strategies that will help their children in school. On Dec. 15 our school will host a Winter Concert. The students will perform a medley of holiday songs to get us into the holiday spirit. The staff of Hardeeville Elementary School would like to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday season. Ridgeland Hardeeville High School (Principal Karen Parker): Ridgeland-Hardeeville High School celebrated several big happenings during the month of November. We had two teachers to receive Bright Ideas grant awards. They were consumer science teacher, Mrs. Susie Ingram and a Spanish teacher, Mrs. Shannon Brown. Our students who did well on spring standardized assessments were treated to a day at Station 300 in Bluffton. They played games, bowled and had lunch on us. Duchette Polite, Executive Director of First Steps, spent a half day with us as our principal for a day. She really enjoyed shadowing the principal and interacting with the students and staff at RHHS. As we excitedly await our winter holiday break, we have plans for some more exciting events. We will have our fall athletic banquet on Dec. 16 at 7 p.m. and our Evening of Excellence Program for our high achievers on Dec. 17 at 6 p.m. Both will be held in the multipurpose room. On Dec. 18, we have invited our senior citizens to share in our winter celebration program and have lunch with us. Congratulations to our November Teacher of the month, band director, Davaron Edwards. I think you would agree that the Marching Jaguars step high! They have participated in numerous competitions and parades and have won many awards. If you have never seen them in action, you are missing a treat. Our Classified Staff of the Month is Cynthia Robino, our school to work coordinator. She has placed many students on jobs, set up internships, counseled students, helped students complete resumes and applications, etc. She does so much for the students and staff at RHHS. It is basketball season and the Jaguars are ready! They have participated in scrimmages, tournaments, and their first game against Whale Branch. The varsity head coaches, Jeremiah Faber (boys) and Frederick Toomer (girls) are geared up for a winning season. Please come and support our athletes. You can find the schedule on our schools webpage which can be accessed from the districts homepage jcsd.net. As always, the staff and students of Ridgeland-Hardeeville High really appreciate all of your support. Continue to spread the positive messages because there is power in the tongue. The Jaguars of RHHS will always strive for excellence as we continue to Name, Claim, Believe and Achieve Academic Success. Ridgeland Elementary School (Principal Robert Candillo): Greetings from the Ridgeland Elementary School family! It is hard to believe that we have already completed half of the second quarter of the 2014-2015 school year. This has been an outstanding year so far and we have a lot going on for the benefit of our children. Our partnerships with local agencies including United Way of the Lowcountry, the Antioch Education Foundation, the Good News Club, and First Presbyterian Church Hilton Head have continued to blossom. We have an increased number of volunteers who are working with reading, writing and math skills with our students in addition to several book-buddies programs. Through our districts partnership with Antioch Education Foundation, seniors from Ridgeland-Hardeeville High are coming over twice per week in the afternoon to work on reading skills. Our STAR Homework Club (a grant-funded partnership between RES and the SC State Chamber of Commerce and SCE&G) is also serving 30+ children four days per week. Over the past few months our 3rd through 5th grade teachers have received literacy training with the Daily Five model and we are really working hard to improve our teaching practices with regards to writing instruction. Lastly, all of our 5th-grade girls have completed an eight-week study, A Girls Guide to Becoming Great, written by local author Rhonda Mincey. Our girls and their families will celebrate with a dinner celebration in mid-December. There is so much going on at RES and we have a lot to be proud of! While we are celebrating our Average Growth Rating for the second year in a row, we know that there is a lot of work that lies ahead as we continue on a path of overall improvement. We need you to come out and volunteer and share in this exciting time of change. Please remember to like us on Facebook and visit our website (res.jcsd.net) for more information. We wish everyone a joyous and safe holiday season. Hardeeville-Ridgeland Middle School (Principal Eric Jeffcoat): Hardeeville-Ridgeland Middle School has implemented new reading and math intervention programs to assist students who are not on grade level. The new reading intervention programs are System 44 Next Generation and Read 180 Next Generation. System 44 Next Generation is proven to help students master the foundational reading skills required for success with the new standards, college, and career through explicit instruction in phonics, comprehension, and writing. READ 180 is a comprehensive system of curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional development proven to raise reading achievement for struggling readers in grades 4-12. The new math intervention is Math 180. MATH 180 is a comprehensive system of curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional development designed to equip older struggling students with the knowledge, reasoning, and confidence to thrive in algebra. All three intervention programs use a blended model of direct instruction and adaptive technology. Recently our school had a very successful canned food drive. Students and staff filled bins with canned goods to be given to those in need. In the near future we will be having our induction ceremonies for our academies.
