JEREMIAH 11 Reading through this chapter, I realise Gods main concern here is OBEDIENCE. Between verses 1-11, I count 11 times in which God uses the words Obey or words that have the effect of obedience. Perhaps the anchoring verse of this whole discourse is this; ...Obey My voice, and do according to all that I command you; so shall you be My people, and I will be your God... (Jeremiah 11:4 NKJV) We may be tempted to think obedience is just an Old Testament issue like Ive heard some of my friends say. They say obedience is unnecessary because we are under grace and not the law. However, that is ignoring explicit texts on obedience. Notice how these next verses connect our relationship with God with obedience, the same way the Jeremiah text does. For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother. (Matthew 12:50 NKJV) You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. (John 15:14 NKJV) If you love Me, keep My commandments. (John 14:15 NKJV) And of course, James says if you break one commandment, then youre guilty of breaking them all. He was referring to the TEN Commandments. For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all. (James 2:10 NKJV) Obedience remains relevant.
