JESUS HEALING THE MAN WITH A WITHERED HAND MATT. 12:1-21 INTRODUCTION: PROPOSITION: Jesus is the Lord of the Sabbath. QUESTIONS: How did Jesus prove that He was the Lord of the Sabbath? I. BY EXPLAINING HISTORY TO BACK UP HIS APPEALS (THE SIGN OF HIS AUTHORITY-THE REVELATION OF HIS DIVINE HIGHNESS)-12:1-8 A. HE LED HIS DISCIPLES TO EXPERIENCE THE ALLOWANCES GIVEN BY THE LAW. Application: Sabbath laws don’t restrict deeds of 1) Necessity-3,4 2) Service to God-5,6 3) Acts of Mercy-7,8 These rules added by the Pharisees are taken from the Mishna and Talmud: thenazareneway/sabbath/39_prohib_sabbath.htm BAKING BREAD 1) Sowing 2) Plowing 3) Reaping 4) Binding sheaves 5) Threshing 6) Winnowing 7) Selecting 8) Grinding 9) Sifting 10) Kneading 11) Baking MAKING GARMENT 1) Shearing wool 2) Washing wool 3) Beating wool 4) Dyeing wool 1) Spinning 2) Weaving 3) Making two loops 4) Weaving two threads 5) Separating two threads 6) Tying 7) Untying 8) Sewing stitches 9) Tearing 10) Trapping MAKING LEATHER 1) Slaughtering 2) Flaying 3) Tanning 4) Scraping hide 5) Marking hides 6) Cutting hide to shape 7) Writing two or more letters 8) Erasing two or more letters BUILDING A STRUCTURE 1) Building 2) Demolishing 3) Extinguishing a fire 4) Kindling a fire 5) Putting the finishing touch on an object 6) Transporting an object between a private domain and the public domain, or for a distance of 4 cubits within the public domain. Application: SABBATH LAWS DON’T RESTRICT DEEDS OF 4) Necessity-3,4 5) Service to God-5,6 6) Acts of mercy-7,8 B. HE LED THE PHARISEES TO SEE THE ALLOWANCES RECORDED IN HISTORY 1) Jesus Appealed to the King, Mat 12:3,4- 2) Jesus Appealed to the Priests, Mat 12:5,6 3) Jesus Appealed to the Prophets, Mat 12:7 II. BY EXECUTING THE HEALING OF THE MAN WITH A DEFORMED/WITHERED HAND ON THE SABBATH, 12:9-13 (THE SIGN OF HIS ABILITY-RESTORATION OF HEALTH) Mat 12:9 He went on from there and entered their synagogue. Mat 12:10 And a man was there with a withered hand. And they asked him,"Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?" -so that they might accuse him. A. THE EXPOSURE OF EVIL MOTIVES As they pointed to the man with the deformed hand the Pharisees tried to trick Jesus by asking him if it was legal to heal on the Sabbath, their Sabbath rules said that people could be helped on the Sabbath several times, and none of those healings were in response to emergencies, If Jesus had waited until another day, he would have been submitting to the Pharisees authority, showing that their petty rues were equal to God’s law. If He healed the man on the Sabbath, the Pharisees could claim that because Jesus broke their rules, his power was not from God. But Jesus made it clear how ridiculous and petty their rules were. God is a God of people, not rules. The best time to reach out to someone is when he or she needs help. The Pharisees place their laws above human need and they were so concerned about Jesus breaking one of their rules that they did not care about the man’s deformed hand. What is your attitude toward others? If your convictions don’t allow you to help certain people, your convictions may not be in tune with God’s Word. Don’t allow rule keeping to blind you to human need. B. THE EMPHASIS TO DO GOOD-Mat 12:11 He said to them, "Which one of you, who has a sheep, if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not take hold of it and lift it out? Mat 12:12 Of how much more value is a man than a sheep! So it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath." C. THE ELUCIDATION OF HIS ABILITY- Mat 12:13 Then he said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." And the man stretched it out, and it was restored, healthy like the other. Application: Jesus reaffirmed that Sabbath was made for man’s benefit and for God’s glory. It was never intended to be a yoke of bondage to the people of God (Mark 2: 27; Luke 6:9) refusal to good is tantamount to doing evil, James 4:17. III. BY EXERCISING HIS HUMILITY AMIDST THE ENVY OF THE PHARISEES (THE SIGN OF HIS ATTITUDE- THE RECOGNITION OF HIS HUMILITY)-12:14-21 A. THE HYPOCRISY OF THE PHARISEES- Mat 12:14 1) The Attitudes of the Pharisees 2) The Ambition of the Pharisees B. THE HOLINESS OF THE LORD IS SEEN, Mat 12:15 1) Withdrawal FROM THE crowd. 2) Warning those people who were healed and helped-mat 12:16. 3) The word of the LORD is fulfilled- Mat 12:17 4) The witness from god is marked-Mat 12:18. C. THE HUMILITY OF THE LORD, Mat 12:19-20 THIS IS SEEN IN HIS WORKS: 1) He was gentle 2) He was quiet 3) He was meek D. THE HOPE FROM THE LORD-Mat 12:21 CONCLUSION: It is not wrong to do a good thing in order to help others. Jesus rebuked the Pharisees for their overemphasis on their man-made rules and traditions and the consequent rejection of the Word of God-the Torah.
