The Jewish South., August 05, 1898, Image 2 About The Jewish South. (Richmond, Va.) 1893-1899 Mr. Marx Mitteldorfer (R. E. Lee Camp No. 1 C.V.) died at his home in this city last Sunday morning at 12:10 oclock. Some six weeks ago the deceased suffered a stroke of paralysis from which he gradually recovered. Last Saturday he seemed much better than since he had been sick, so much so that he visited the vaudeville that evening, and it was only a short time after returning home from the entertainment that he was stricken with apoplexy and died. Mr. Mitteldorfer was born in this city August 9,1842. At the beginning of the war, while yet a youth, he entered the Confederate army with the Fayette Artillery, served throughout the contest with credit and fidelity, surrendering at Appomattox. Since the war Mr. Mitteldorfer had engage in the decorating business, one of his last contracts being the Auditorium at Atlanta upon the occasion of the recent Confederate re-union. The deceased is survived by a widow and 1 five children —Misses Minnie and Rosalie, Messrs. Joseph, Le Roy and Moses Mitteldorfer; three brothers — Messrs. David, Ellis and Charles Mittleldorfer, and three sisters —Mesdames Jonas Marcuse, Flora Hutzler, and Julius Straus. The funeral was held in the mortuary chapel of the Hebrew Cemetery last Monday afternoon at 5:30 oclock. Besides the immense concourse of relatives and friends, there were also present delegations from Lee Camp Confederate Veterans, the Masons, Bne Brith, and Heptasophs, of all of which the deceased was a member. ¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬The Jewish South., December 23, 1898, Image 2 GIFT TO SOLDIERS’ HOME OF $500 Among the bequests of the late Meyer Heller are $1,000 to the Orphans Home, Atlanta, Ga.; $500 to the Ladies Hebrew Benevolent Association ; $500 to Lee Camp Soldiers Home; $300 to the Retreat for the Sick. The remainder of the estate is willed to his brother, nephews and nieces, in sums ranging from $1,000 to $3,000. The Jewish South., September 22, 1893, Image 1 About The Jewish South. (Richmond, Va.) 1893-1899 LEE CAMP HALL USED AS WORSHIP CENTER The Congregation Beth Shalome worshipped at Lee Camp Hall. There was something almost pathetic in the devoutness of this handful—the last of a once prosperous congregation. Mr. Joseph Cohn conducted the services, those present participating to an extent that years ago caused the late Henry S. Jacobs to characterize the congregation as the best at responses he had ever heard. Mr.Cohen was assisted by his son, Abram. The Jewish South., April 30, 1897, Image 3 About The Jewish South. Major Jed. Hotchkiss, of Staunton, is to address us, and with a good musical programme, we anticipate a most pleasant evening. Hoping that the ladies of your association will share the pleasure with us, I am, Very cordially yours, Mrs. Kate S. Winn, Chairman of Committee. The Jewish South., May 07, 1897, Image 3 Wednesday, May 19th, was selected as Memorial Day, the exercises to be held at the Hebrew burying ground, in the afternoon. Invitations were extended to the Hollywood, Hollywood Junior, Oak wood, and Oakwood Junior Memorial associations to take part in the exercises. An invitation from the Oakwood Memorial Association to participate in their exercises on the 10th instant was received and accepted. A letter was received from the Old Guard of Lee Camp, which has recently been reorganized, tendering their services whenever they shall require its aid in any way. The letter was highly appreciated and duly acknowledged by the association. The memorial exercises will be about as usual and the programme will be announced later. The usual invitation will be extended to the Walker Light Guard to participate in the exercises. The Jewish South., May 21, 1897, Image 3 A joint meeting of the three Bne Brith lodges of Richmond will be held at Lee Camp Hall on Sunday afternoon, May 30th, at 4:30 oclock. A delegation from the General Committee of the district will be present, and will present Past Grand President Julius Straus with a testimonial. MEMORIAL DAY EXERCISES: The memorial observance at the Hebrew Cemetery last Wednesday was quite impressive and largely attended. The procession, consisting of a detail from Lee Camp, the Walker Light Guard, and those who participated in the programme, left the Jackson statue at 0 oclock. Before leaving several wreaths were placed Upon the statue. Arriving at the grounds the military formed to the north of the soldiers section, while those who were to take part in the exercises entered the stand erected for that purpose. The opening prayer by Br. Calisch was followed by the singing of Shall We Meet Beyond the River? by a quartette. Hon. D. C. Richardson was next introduced and made an eloquent address. America was then sung by all present, Captain Cunningham leading. Rabbi Calisch pronounced the benediction, after which a salute was fired by the Walker Light Guard. Taps were sounded, the visitors left, and in a few minutes the grounds were deserted. Beautiful floral tributes were sent by the Hollywood and Oakwood Associations, senior and junior.
