There are endless benefits to teachers, students, parents, children of all ages to developing simple skills of becoming more present, slowing down, slowing down their breathing, counting 3 or 5 breaths, learning to pause and notice what they are thinking and feeling before taking action. Peaceful parenting puts so much focus on the parent becoming aware of their own emotional reactions and developing healthy ways of managing and releasing their frustrations. Success often depends on the parents level of commitment to learning to centre themselves and take more responsibility for their emotions, hence modelling the same and having the feeling of the benefit of slowing down and centering so that they can share these simple skills with their child. It can start by giving your child your full attention when you see they are worked up (or heading in that direction!) and taking a couple of slightly deeper breaths with the focus on releasing stress on the outbreath and inviting them to do the same lets just breathe out some stress together. Even preverbal children pick it up. This is an interesting article and accompanying video where the teacher and students share what they see to be the benefits of practicing mindfullness in the class and at home. ~ Genevieve Mindfulness is learning to be present for what is happening with a mind imbued with kindness and interest. It usually involves slowing down and doing one task at a time. It leads to a feeling of calm, clarity and as a consequence more confidence and creativity. One of the primary ironies of modern education is that we ask students to pay attention dozens of times a day yet we never teach them how. The practice of mindfullness teaches students how to pay attention and this way of paying attention enhances both acedemic and social emotional learning. (Saltzman 2011)
