JUBA – the former political detainees also known as the group of 10 came out demanding that the recent proposal by IGAD member states and government should limit the role of Salva Kiir Mayardiit in an interim government proposed to run the country in the next three years. Precisely in August 25, the east African leaders proposed an interim government headed by field marshal president salva kiir mayardiit to lead an interim government that should last for two years. The proposal indicated that Kiir should remain as the leader of the all armed forces in the country and the commander in chief. He is also destined to remain as the president of the country in an interim federal government. This is in an essence will keep Kiir in power 2 more years after his term expires based on the election held in 2010. But based on the proposal put forward by the former detainees, president Kiir should not be maintained as the head of the government but only as head of the state with lesser powers. “The Protocol has ignored the consensus reached by the stakeholders in the thematic committees formed by the IGAD Envoys. The Political Committee on transitional Governance Arrangements unanimously agreed on the formula for power sharing between the President and the Prime Minister during the Transitional Period,” writes Deng Alor. Alor added: “The Protocol confirmed President Kiir as both the Head of State and Government. The consensus of all stakeholders, except the Government delegation, was for the Prime Minister to be the Chief Executive in charge of the day to day running of the Government while the President performs the functions of Head of State,” The group of former detainees believed that for peace to come in south sudan, there must be a clear and directive arrangements and that must exclude Kiir in any possible government formed. They objected that Dr Riek Machar, the leader of the SPLM in Opposition shouldn’t run for any electoral post after the interim period. Alor urged the IGAD members state to reconsider their standpoints in bringing peace to south sudan
