JUST FOR TODAY, I will refuse to be satisfied with my past successes. Realizing that todays victory can quite easily dissolve into tomorrows failure, I will, at best, remain in a state of dissatisfied satisfaction. For only one victory can beget the next victory. Is true success not the progressive realization of worthy goals? But, how can the journey be a progressive one if I choose to vegetate on some pyrrhic victory? Indeed, after a victory, I may take the afternoon off, but I cannot not take the year off! The story is famously told of a great Mongolian army that set out to conquer an empire, thousands of miles away. Shortly after setting out, they came across a small town, which they sacked and plundered. This is an appetizer! The General gleefully proclaimed. They spent an entire week celebrating this victory, dinning and wining on the towns choicest food and wine. But, while they reveled in these gastronomic delights, another great army took the initiative from them and went ahead to conquer the empire! Complacency will have no place in my life on this journey called life. In the velds of Southern Africa, each morning, the gazelle wakes up and starts running, knowing that it must outrun the slowest lion, or be eaten for breakfast. Conversely, the lion wakes up and starts running, knowing that it must outrun the fastest gazelle or forfeit breakfast. So, whether Im lion or gazelle, I must be on the race track! For me, the peak of one mountain will be the bottom of the next. From mountain to mountain shall I scale, wasting no time in self-praise for deeds that are, at best, only a mere reflection of what I can really achieve. The sky is not my limit. I have none.
