January 19, 1943: BIRTHDAY -- Janis Joplin Janis Joplin gained notice as part of the San Francisco hippie music scene along with bands like Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, among others with the band, Big Brother and the Holding Company -- but her uninhibited powerful blues singing so overshadowed the work of her band, going solo was inevitable. Her first album, I GOT DEM OLD KOZMIC BLUES, MAMA released soon after her appearance at Woodstock was a major disappointment though she continued to attract interest. She died of a drug overdose, October 4, 1970 with the world saddened that a singer with so much talent and potential was snuffed out with so little recorded material to show. Her posthumous album, PEARL, however, offered the lasting statement of how much she had to give -- fronted by the hit, Kris Kristoffersons, Me and Bobby McGee, she was backed by a small combo and lean production which allowed her singing to shine. PEARL became an instant classic and one of the great albums of its time leaving the world wondering what could have been. https://youtube/watch?v=j0f5ZG9LG6k
