January 24, 2014 Dr. S. P. Udayakumar, Ph.D. Coordinator People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy Parish Priest’s Bungalow Idinthakarai 627 104 Tamil Nadu The Chief Election Commissioner Election Commission of India Nirvachan Sadan Ashoka Road New Delhi-110001 Dear Sir: Greetings! May I bring to your kind attention an undemocratic and insidious practice that is being followed by some of the political parties in Tamil Nadu against the letter and spirit of the Indian Constitution and our democratic heritage. The ruling AIADMK in Tamil Nadu asked its cadres to apply for party ticket during December 19-27, 2013 by paying Rs. 25,000 per application at the party headquarters. The party received a total of 4,537 applications from candidates seeking tickets to contest in all the 40 Lok Sabha constituencies in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and made a whopping sum of Rs. 11.34 crores as profit. Another major party in Tamil Nadu, the DMK, has asked its cadres to pay Rs. 25,000 as fee for general constituencies and Rs. 10,000 for reserved constituencies along with the application fee of Rs. 1,000 to apply for party ticket. Yet another party in Tamil Nadu, the DMDK, has begun selling application forms from January 23, 2014 at the party headquarters in Chennai and the application forms cost Rs 20,000 and Rs 10,000 for general and reserved constituencies, respectively. It is also reliably learnt that the DMK asks its prospective candidates to deposit Rs. 4 crores in the party office before he or she is considered seriously for the party ticket. Similarly, the DMDK is said to be demanding hundreds of crores of rupees as bribe to join hands with one of the major coalitions that are being put together by the various political parties in Tamil Nadu. All these money transactions, horse trading and business-like ‘mergers and acquisitions’ make us lose faith in the very democratic precepts and practices of our country. Hence may I request you to order a probe into these money delaings of the various political parties in Tamil Nadu and save our democratic heritage please. Looking forward to your immediate action, I send you my best personal regards and all peaceful wishes, Cordially, S. P.
