Japanese people have a custom to offer rice cakes. mochi, in the new year. Traditionally, families or neighbors get together to make them at the end of the year before. Few families; however, own the big mortars to make rice cakes. Today the events are held at kindergartens or elementary schools for children, and they make their own mochi to bring them home. People conventionally decorate mochi putting a small tangerine on the top. Department and grocery stores sell them in sealed packages. This year, you also see the sheep on the top of mochi instead of the fruit because 2015 will be the year of sheep according to the Chinese zodiac. Rice cakes are typical food that Japanese people eat and decorate for the new year.
