Japanese pharmaceutical companies are on shopping spree. Japanese drug maker Otsuka is reaching for a deal outside its home country to buy California-based Astex Pharmaceuticals for about $886 million in a bid to solidify its position in fast-growing field of oncology since Astex is a cancer drug specialist. The biggest deal in terms of Japanese company came in 2011, when Takeda Pharmaceutical snapped up the Swiss drug maker Nycomed for $13.7 billion. Predessor to this deal was Astella OSI deal in 2010 where Astella payed $ 4 billion to OSI with almost the same intention to bolster a nascent cancer drug business in US.
