Jason here - Over the years we developed a reputation for pulling off unusual changes and time signatures, sometimes at breakneck speeds. Before Change was released, our sets were still populated with a lot of those songs. So for me, Sentimental Man became a cool, welcome breeze in a set list. I love everything about it: the brisk, funky rhythm, the ghostly keyboard part, and one of my favorite vocal melodies in our whole catalog. I always heard it as a meditation on a difficult relationship sung as a lullaby, and Travis is the only writer I can think of who would choose that juxtaposition, and then make it so effective. We were listening to a lot of dance music during the writing of Change. Eric and Joe came up with the hypnotic groove that threads its way through the song, deconstructs itself at the chorus, and then reforms again, like some kind of funky Transformer. I tend to be very deliberate as a musician, and this guitar part is a good example of that inclination. Its architecture as much as it is music, very calculated and unhurried, the chord shapes and the guitar sound chosen to emphasize the dreamy feel of the song. Added together, these elements make an open, almost agnostic introduction to a record full of thoughtful meditations on so many different parts of life. Its a perfect starter for Change https://play.spotify/track/0nol0l9eqhiTdXqqwKwDNP
