Jeff Buckeys Grace was released 20 years ago today. It was an absolutely seminal album for me. I was a vocalist given a new recipe to mix straight rock with different flavours. It stirred the beginnings of my own songwriting and lyrics and made me listen to the arrangements as I had never really done before. It bonded me with a community of passionate people and served as almost a personality test for new acquaintances, Do you love it? And Jeff Buckey certainly raised my erotic interest, him being my main late teenage object-of-lust. At the time, this album seemed made just for me - intelligence, desire, longing, the gothic tinge of the unhinged and overwrought. I listened to it so long I actually burned it out but, writing for a new album, Ive needed lessons from these songs and gone back to find out that its still a towering album, still essential to me. Thank you Jeff Buckley.
