Jefferson County Public School officials said Monday morning the office received a phone call from a family member saying a student may have brought a weapon to class. School security immediately found the student and his friend, but one student took off running, leaving behind a backpack. School security found two handguns inside the backpack. The student took off and ran out the door. Metro police were later able to catch up with the student off the premises in the neighborhood, JCPS spokesman Ben Jackey said. You hear about all these kids bringing stuff to school and shooting kids every day, you know, and for it to happen right next to your house, said concerned parent Talena Kuprion. Valley High School and Dixie Elementary were put on heightened security after the tip was received. In a letter sent to parents, the school said there were no threats made to students or staff. Metro police took over the case and charged both juveniles with unlawful possession of a weapon on school property.
