Jefferson High Schools classes 63, 64, 65 held their 50th reunion celebration last night at Monroe Boat Club. For those of you who dont know heres an unofficial story of the birth of Jefferson High. Jefferson High School 50th Reunion Long, long ago, in a kingdom not so far away, there lived a people who were worried that they must surrender their children and pay homage to the big city of Monroe. The people sent their children far away with great reluctance in the bellies of great yellow beasts and other forms of questionable conveyance; boyfriend’s jalopies, motorcycles and bicycles, none of which particularly pleased the citizens. These children came back to the kingdom after four years, changed forever and of only small use to anyone. After many years of worry, the people of the kingdom said, “Let’s build a high school of our own! We can do away with foreign city influences and purge ourselves of the unwise authority they hold over our children.” So, they did. Jefferson High School graduated its first class of seniors in June of 1963. Depending on which class member you ask, this was either the 51st, 50th, or 49th class reunion, but for most of them it’s really more a gathering of family. Many of the early Jefferson graduates attended high school with the same kids that went to Brest Road kindergarten. They went to early and middle school together in the 5100 Garage Building and the junior high school on N. Stoney Creek Road. Church, Cub Scouts, Brownies, 4-H clubs, FFA, helped solidify the bond between these graduating classes. They also got chased off Sisung’s farm or caught smoking in the school construction area and remember such places as Shorty’s, Bussel’s and Daniels’ garages, sock-hops at Dixie Skateland, ice-skating on Lake Erie in bone chilling cold and summers at the beaches.
