JesseBen Andrus History Page Just another WordPress site Ndugu Jesse Andros Band Multi-Instrumentalist/ Composer/Arranger/Publisher/Producer Jesse Ben Andrus was born in Los Angeles California; his classmates included Gerald Albright – alto sax, Ray Brown – trumpet (Earth Wind, and Fire), Kenny Pickens -trombone (Brothers Johnson). As a principle flute player, Jesse was also a member of the LAPD Junior band, which toured and competed for the city of Los Angeles, California. Won state competition that year, and proceeded to nationals. Patrice Rushen was my flute section leader in Locke High School’s summer camp. Leon “Ndugu” Chancellor was a drummer from Locke High School. Jesse Andrus studied orchestration and arranging with Dr. Don Simpson after testing and auditioning into his 2nd year at Los Angeles City College. Among other advanced theory, harmony, and piano classes, he played 1st tenor, flute and clarinet in the ” Jazz Orchestra” under the direction of Doc Simpson. (former Gene Krupa bassist) “Doc Simpson kind of adopted me after I played the tenor sax for him; says Jesse” Jesse Andrus was a graduate of the F2 (Enlisted Bandleader Course) at the “Armed Forces School of Music” located in Littlecreek, Virginia in 1983. Five months of the most intensive study the military had to offer. Out a class of 24 only 4 graduated. “It wasn’t a place to learn, you had to know your stuff before you got there”. As an enlisted bandleader in 1983, Jesse lead the 19th Army Band Ft Dix, New Jersey in concert and on the parade fields. He was also a member of the 3rd Armored Div Band, Frankfurt Germany (1975-77)/ 5thArmy Band, San Antonio, Texas 1977-79/LACC/14thArmy Band, Ft McClellan, Alabama(6 months)/ 8th Army Band, Seoul, South Korea (1981-83)/19th Army Band, Ft Dix (1983-85) Jesse Andrus has been teaching for the Jazz Apprenticeship Program previously in “Montana Studios” on Manhattan’s Westside in NY City between 2002-2009. Under the direction of head instructor /pianist Sarina Bachlietner the program has moved into New York City’s Lincoln Center occasion. Alumni have included Cecil McBee, Steve Kirby, Steve Bescrone – Frank Wagner-bass, Rodney Jones – guitar, Bruce Cox, & Richie Derosa -drums, Hugh Frazier- trombone, Patience Higgens, & John Stubblefield– woodwinds and others. Stationed in Frankfurt, Germany with the US Army band, Jesse Andrus first started performing live jazz at the age of 19, with the band “Jazz Express”, featuring Jan Meyers-bass, Joe Letmany/Sandy Henderly -piano, Dan Fullerton-drums and vocalist Marty Kurk. Clubs include, Down By The Riverside (our regular gig), other clubs included, Sinkasten, Jazz Kniepe, Birdland, Jazz Keller, and others. Trobonist Albert Mangelsdorf (solo) was a regular at the Jazz Keller. Jesse has worked in Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Holland, England, Hungary, France, Italy, South Korea, Japan, the US Virgin Islands, Hawaii, and most of the United States.– His early bands of the 80’s featured many artists. “Working with Charles Fambrough/ Arthur Harper -bass, Uri Caine -piano, Steve Nelson-vibes, George Johnson – drums was a learning and growing experience I will never forget”. George and Broski had worked with McCoy Tyner a few years earlier. Fambrough afterwards went with Art Blakey and the “Jazz Messengers. “Handling their (Brosky and George) inflated egos, back then was a challenge”; says Jesse. Dakota Staton, Jill Scott, and also Philadelphia jazz vocalists Carol Harris, Michell Beckham, Denise King, Val Rey, Barbara Walker, Jeannie Brooks, Kathy Roberts, Sherry Butler, Miss Justine, Denise Montana, and Ella Gant, Gina Roche are some of the elite area divas. ” I have always had to pick moments to interact with great vocalist, so for me to nack up jazz greats Dakota Stanton and quest Gloria Lynn at one of my gigs in Atlantic City, was a memorable experience,” say’s Jesse. Recording artist/actor/educater, having shots on many TV networks in Philadelphia. Has done commercials and voice over for major productions. The biggest being (New Jersey and You Perfect) and the voice of Motown Memories which ran in Atlantic City NJ for 6 months. Jesse Andrus debut CD “Soy Califa” on the DBK jazz labels is stills a great seller with great reviews. It features jazz saxophone and the Afro/Cubano rhythm’s of Edguardo Cintron, Noel Cintron, and Pablo Batiste. “Straight No Chaser” is another hot “Grammy Nominated CD” featuring myself with Edguardo’s Cintron’s band.———- Abstract Truth – “Road Less Traveled” is a compilation of great funk jazz original compositions mastered by Masterworks. Can be found on CD Baby and Myspace/abstracttruthmusic “East Meet West” feature’s an organ trio (alla Jimmy Smith), with Rich Budesa/Organ, Bob Devos/Guitar, Tony Day/Drums and Omar Hill/ Percussion coming out 2010.———- Other recordings include many for 615 Music, Sony Music Inc., recorded in New York city with vocal stylist, actor and long time friend Jay Stollman, featuring artist such as Lenny White/drums, Scott Spray and Victor Bailey on bass, bluesman Gary Ciuci and Chieli Minucci on Guitar. Fusionaires “No Prisoners” on the Headstrong Record Label, featuring Simeon Cain (Henry Rollins Band) – Drums, Wilbo Wright on Bass, and Jack McCracken – Guitar With the band “Just Friends” we recorded several albums for EMI Records backing Korea’s favorite son Kim June and a record of our own called “Just Friends”, featuring Fred Hughes Jr. – piano, Darryl Shockley – bass, Don Williams -Drums Warren Oree & “The Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble’s” CD, with Greg (JuJu) Jones –drums, Umar Raheem – Saxophones, April Thorp, and Zen Zele -vocals The CD “Tribes of the Future” feature’s the music of Omar Hill.
