Jesus Scared me! Mark 6:48-50 He saw that they were in serious trouble, rowing hard and struggling against the wind and waves. About three o’clock in the morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. He intended to go past them, but when they saw him walking on the water, they cried out in terror, thinking he was a ghost. They were all terrified when they saw him.But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage! I am here!” People are spending so much money to be purposely scared during this Halloween season. Hallow-Een or Holy Evil is really not a holiday that Christians should embrace without discretion. This is not our holiday or Holy Day. Yet we dress our children up as ghosts, witches, and even Devils. We cannot confuse our worship of Jesus with the celebration of Ghosts or Spirits. Theres nothing scary about Jesus! Or is it? The Disciples were in a boat crossing over the lake in yet another storm. It was 3 am. In horror movies it always seems to be 3am. Theres a belief that the veil between the spiritual world and the physical is thinnest at this time. There is more paranormal activity. Sometimes I find myself waking up at 3am. Instead of looking for ghosts though Im looking for Jesus. Jesus saw that his disciples were in serious trouble. He wasnt in the boat with them. He was still on shore but he saw them in the middle of the lake in a storm at 3am. He saw that the wind was against them. He started walking on the water toward them with intentions to pass them. Why would Jesus pass them when he knew they were in trouble? Because when they saw him they confused him for a ghost. How else do you explain a man walking on water at 3am in a bad storm?! Hes not a Ghost but hes master over the Supernatural. There is no such thing as Holy Evil but there is someone who is more powerful than any paranormal activity. 3am and every hour after must come under his subjection. The Disciples cried out thinking that Jesus was a ghost. Jesus says to them and to us: 1. Do not be afraid. As believers in Jesus Christ we dont fear what other people fear. We have authority over Spirits and principalities. My grandmother always told me if you sense a spirit or ghost simply ask them, what in the name of Jesus do you want? What she was telling me was that I have authority over spirits. 2. Take courage. In other words get yourself together. I aint afraid of no ghosts! As Disciples of Christ we are filled with the Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the Power of God that resides in each believer and supersedes any spirit that would try to come against you. Greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world. 3. It is I! Jesus stepped in the boat and the storm stopped. When you recognize who Jesus is that is when the storms have to cease. When Moses wanted to know the power behind the burning bush and what voice was sending him back to Egypt, God said, I am is my name. Jesus says the same thing here, It is I! Jesus is not spooky! Jesus is I Am! Dear God, Thank you for reminding during this season of the spooky that Jesus is sovereign. Keep my focus on Jesus and not on ghosts. Thank you for filling me with your Ghosts and reminding me that greater is he that is in me than he that is in the world. The storm is over because Jesus just stepped in my situation. In his name, Amen
