Jesus teaching on turning the other cheek has several layers to it, but today Id like to focus on the aspect of what might be called emotional freedom. What I mean is, we live in a world that teaches us that there is an automatic relationship between what happens to us on the outer and what our emotional response should be. So if someone is angry and strikes us physically or lashes out at us verbally, were programmed to believe we have no choice but to get angry in kind and respond accordingly. But the truth is, when we connect with our Real self, we can learn to embrace the peace of that self unconditionally and independently of what others do to us. We can stop reacting to others reactions as well as our own reactions, and thus step out of the never-ending ping-pong game of action-reaction that is so dominant in many peoples lives. Obviously this takes practice, it takes the eagle eye of self observation, the approach of neutrality and non-judgment as well as prayer and meditation to clear the negative energies in our beings. Yet it absolutely can be done. Peace, unconditional peace, is a choice. We can only be emotionally free when we make that choice. And we can know that when we do turn the other cheek, we are in fact turning the dial of our consciousness toward self realization and spiritual freedom.
