Job Opening: Assistant Recreation Director Town of Canton, Massachusetts Job Responsibilities: Position performs supervisory, managerial, programming, and administrative work in planning, developing, and implementation of comprehensive recreation programs, facilities, services and all related duties as required. Employee performs responsible supervisory and administrative duties that require independent judgment and initiative. Manages off site programs; administrates daily operations and leadership. Provides direct supervision of over 100 seasonal employees and volunteers, including accessibility on evenings, weekends, and holidays. Manages and collaborates with program leaders and outside vendors. Work is performed in moderately noisy and very busy office/program space as well as remote sites (outdoor pool, skating rink, parks, and schools); frequent customers and constant interruptions are part of the daily operations of the office/program. Regularly operates standard office equipment including computer, telephone, printer, and standard office machines as needed; operates automobile and light trucks. Employee has frequent contact with the general public, department staff, parents, and participants. Regularly interacts with the Playground and Recreation Commission, vendors, School Department Personnel, the Board of Health, Police and Fire Departments. Other contacts are with Canton municipal departments, other recreation departments, and organizations such as the American Red Cross and the Massachusetts Recreation and Parks Association. Contacts are made via e-mail, in writing, in person, and on the telephone. Performs administrative and management duties of the department such as planning, organizing and scheduling activities, facilities and staff; services customers daily. Evaluates community needs and interests regarding recreation programming and facilities. Develops and implements appropriate action, alterations, and offerings to the Town. Develops and implements marketing and public relations content for website, brochures, newspaper, community television, and other potential sources of promotion. Maintains website programming content. Assists customers with understanding of and pertinent information related to recreation department offerings. Recruits, screens, interviews, trains, supervises, and evaluates part-time and seasonal staff. Independently manages and supervises on and off site recreation programs and staff. Utilizes appropriate safety and risk management strategies. Assists in the preparation, management, and monitoring of operating budget and revolving fund accounts. Works with Recreation Director to develop, maintain, and manage individual program budgets, including year round, seasonal, summer programs, and special events. Procures, controls, and maintains required inventory of equipment and supplies. Oversees contract performance with vendors and suppliers. In the absence of the Recreation Director, responsible for the management and maintenance of the Metropolis Skating Rink, Bolivar Swimming Pool, fields, playgrounds, and parks. Other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications: *Candidates for this position must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation Administration, Physical Education or a closely related field Minimum 5 years related experience in recreation management, preferably in a municipal setting. CPR/AED and First Aid certification required. Valid Massachusetts driver’s license and ability to operate an automobile required. Membership in MRPA, NRPA, and or other similar associations preferred. A candidate for this position should have: Philosophy and principles of recreation planning Recreation equipment, facilities and program requirements for recreation activities on a community-wide scale Park maintenance standards and practices Human behavior in a recreation context Municipal procurement practices Ice rink management practices and principles And further, candidates for this position should have the ability to: Plan and organize recreation activities in a shifting market Detect and analyze customer needs, design responsive programming, and make effective presentations Maintain harmonious relationships with other Town departments, recreation staff, and customers Demonstrate clear and concise written and oral communication skills Interact in a positive and effective manner with all levels of personnel Salary and Benefits: This Full time position will fall under the Personnel Board with full benefits. Salary is competitive and commensurate with skills and experience and this position is budgeted for $50,000 annually.
