Job opportunity! The Metropolitan Museum of Art is seeking an Assistant/Associate Conservator to assist the Costume Institute’s Conservation team with the care and conservation of Collection. This position has an end date of 6/30/2015. Primary Responsibilities and Duties: -Undertake the treatment of costume & textile objects in support of the capital project, exhibition, and loan schedules and the preservation of The Costume Institutes collection -Carry out condition reports/treatment records and photography for Costume Institute artifacts, new acquisitions, outgoing and incoming loans -Contribute to research and publication activities -Participate in daily activities including environmental monitoring, exhibition maintenance, lab maintenance, ordering supplies and using/maintaining equipment -Assist in special projects as required -Other related duties Requirements and Qualifications: Experience and Skills: -Demonstrated experience and knowledge in the treatment and preservation of historic costumes and textiles -A high level of manual skill and ability to complete treatments in an efficient manner in order to fulfill a heavy exhibition and loan schedule -Demonstrated effective prioritization and project management experience -Ability to document treatments, perform scientific & material analysis of objects in order to assess conservation requirements of artifacts -Ability to create and take patterns -Knowledge of haute couture sewing techniques and construction methods -Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) -Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail -Knowledge of fashion history -Proven ability to create, modify and dress mannequins according to conservation protocols -Must be a proactive, communicative, team player with proven follow-through Knowledge and Education: -Graduate degree from a recognized conservation training program -Strong knowledge of conservation principles, ethics, materials and techniques for costume conservation with demonstrated high standards of conservation treatment experience -Minimum of 3 years as a practicing conservator; Museum experience favored Please send cover letter, resume, and salary history to [email protected] with the position title in the subject line.
