John 1:1-5, 1.In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God and the Word was God.2.He was already with God in the beginning. 3. Everything came into existence through him. Not one thing that exists was made without him. 4.He was the source of life and that life was the light for humanity. 5. The light shines in the dark, and the dark has never extinguished it. It is only because of the grace of God that Christ the Sun has not set; for men are very unappreciative, says Luther in explanation of John 1:5 (1537). Though Largely Ignored, Christ the Light Shines On. But the bad, blind world does not desire the lovely Light, nay, it cannot bear it, but persecutes and blasphemes it. Nevertheless this true and eternal Light continues to shine out of special grace for the sake of the little flock that is to be enlightened by it. It does not set because of the ingratitude and contempt of the great godless multitude. In the same sermon the Doctor speaks of the broad implications in the expression Christ is the Light of the world. If Christ is the Light, All else is Darkness and Death. These words deal blows that are really crushing to the light of reason, free will, human powers, etc.He say is effect: All people who are without Christ lack life before God, ard dead and dommed. How indeed can they be expected to have life when they not only walk in darkness but are darkness itself. Therefore John excludes and dismisses all other creatures, speaks only o f human beings, all of whom are in darkness, and say that the Light came to men in order to illuminate them Christ calls Himself the Light of the world,: John 8:12 and 12:35
