John 14:18-31 The Holy Spirits Work In John 13:33, Jesus - TopicsExpress

John 14:18-31 The Holy Spirits Work In John 13:33, Jesus delivers sad news to His disciples-He tells them He will be leaving them soon. Throughout John chapter 14, Jesus Christ comforts His disciples by informing them that, despite His soon departure, He will one day return for His own and, in the meantime, He would send the Holy Spirit to comfort them. In verses 1-18, Jesus tells His followers that they can find comfort by believing in Him (v.1) and trusting that He will fulfill His word. According to Jesus, comfort comes by believing and watching for His promised return (vv.2-4), by being certain of ones relationship to God the Father (vv.5-7), by having the ability to perform even greater works than those of Jesus (v.12), by communicating with God through prayer (vv.13-14), and by possessing the Holy Spirit and utilizing His resources (vv.16-18). In the remaining half of this chapter, Jesus elaborates upon the particular work of the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, whom Christ pledged He would send after His departure. During the next several days, we will notice what Gods Word says about the work of the Holy Spirit in the lives of Jesus disciples and in the lives of all today who have trusted in the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ. But first, notice that Jesus told His disciples He would send (future tense) the Holy Spirit to permanently indwell believers (vv.16-18)-we see from Acts 2 that this occurred on the Day of Pentecost. The disciples did not yet permanently possess the Holy Spirit prior to Jesus ascension to heaven, but when the Spirit descended from above, the disciples were comforted and fully equipped for ministry. Today, we, also, possess this same Holy Spirit! MDC
