John 3:1-16: Jesus is speaking to Nicodemus, a Pharisee, who has come to Him seeking instruction in the Christian faith. We also should seek this instruction. Jesus begins to speak of the necessity of Christian baptism, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God” (vs. 5). Peter also instructed the crowds to enter the kingdom of God via baptism; “Repent, and be baptized, for the forgiveness of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:38). Ananias also instructed Paul, saying, “Arise, and be baptized, and wash away your sins”, “and be filled with the Holy Spirit” (Acts 22:16, 9:17). And Philip also must have instructed the Ethiopian to enter the kingdom of God by baptism, for he says, “Look! Water! What prevents me from being baptized?” (Acts 8:26f). Indeed, it is through baptism that we receive Christ as Savior and Lord. And if we have been baptized, we are to firmly believe that we have received Christ, and have been born again. And we are to live a life worthy of His high calling, lest we fall under His wrath when He separates the sheep from the goats (Matthew 25:31f).
