John Grono was born 1767 in Newport, Pembrokeshire, Wales, United Kingdom and died 4th May 1847 at Grono Park in Pitt Town, New South Wales, Australia of unspecified causes. He married Elizabeth Bristow (1771-1848) 20 July 1790 at St Marys in Rotherhithe, England, United Kingdom. His skills were:- Sailor-boatswain mate Royal Navy, Ships Captain, Ship Owner, Shipbuilder, Farmer. He served in the Royal Navy for over ten years. Came to New South Wales with his wife and their daughters on 3rd May 1799 on the Buffalo. Helped build the Ebenezer Church, which is the oldest existing church building in Australia and the first Presbyterian Church in Australia. Found and named Elizabeth Island, Bligh Sound, and Milford Sound in south-western New Zealand, including Alexander Books and Robert McKenzie. In 1813 rescued some stranded travellers from an offshore island in New Zealand. Built some of the largest ships ever built in New South Wales up till that time, one of 270 tons.
