Joining in the SNP is the single strongest message that any supporter of independence can send. All of us should be aware that, once independence has been achieved, our natural political affiliations can reassert themselves. But the question before us now is “what action can we take that will advance the possibility of independence and what organization will be most effective in helping us to achieve that result?” During the referendum campaign it became very clear that the Labour Party was more focused on Westminster than Scotland. That will certainly not change if they win the next national election. In fact, a Labour government in Westminster will be far less likely to support Scottish independence because they will rely upon members from Scotland. They will be focused on centralizing power in Westminster and clawing back power from Scotland. We all know that, after independence, Scottish-centric parties will spring up. We all know that, post-independence, we will be free to join any of them. But, for now, it’s important that we all send a message of solidarity and that message is most effectively since by joining together behind the single organization that will give us the right of self-determination and self-governance. The tactical action of joining the SNP will advance the strategic objective of independence.
