Joni and Friends Daily Devotional July 1, 2014 Dear Minnie, God with a Flannel You were washed... 1 Corinthians 6:11 Recently a friend of mine had to stay in a hospital for two weeks. When I asked him what the most difficult part was about his long hospitalization, he shook his head and grimaced, Bed baths! I hated having those nurses give me bed baths. I wish I could have done it myself. You can sympathize with my friend, cant you? All of us feel a deep and profound aversion to being bathed by someone else. Personal cleansing is a routine we would really rather do ourselves. To have another approach us with soap and a flannel can be humiliating and embarrassing. But listen to what David prayed: Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow (Psalm 51:7). At other times, David may have felt a reluctance about being bathed by someone else. But the someone David was now asking, was God. There came a time in Davids life when he felt so soiled, so thoroughly dirtied by sin that he cried out to God, Cleanse me ... wash me! He knew that this sort of cleansing was something he could never do for himself, and so he humbled himself before the Lord and presented to Him all of his embarrassing sins. To pray to be washed clean from sin requires humility. After all, a spiritual washing is a profoundly personal thing in an individuals life. __________________________________ Almighty God, thank You for desiring to make me clean. For washing me of my sins, cleansing my heart, and making me pure. I humble myself before You and present all the areas of my life that need to be made right. Im grateful that You desire to do something so powerful and personal in my life as to make me spotless and stainless - and thank You for shedding Your blood on the cross, Your blood that washes me white as snow.
