Journalists Discuss Public Order Act By Sylvester Samba Media Practitioners and Civil Society advocates have completed a two-day training specifically on Part (5) of the 1965 Public Order Act. Part (5) in the said Act deals with Defamation and Seditious Libel under which several Journalists have been arrested and detained. Lawyer Ansu Lansana was the learned Lawyer who voluntarily gave a three hours lecture on part 5 subsections 26, 27, 28, 30, 32, 33 and 37 the legal minded Lawyer Mr. Lansana pleaded with each and every journalist that whatever little information one investigated must be based on fact or truth and in substantiated before it is published or broadcast. He admonished that seek ye first the truth so that the truth shall set you free. Mr. Victor Massaquoi, a facilitator at the training said the rationale behind the training is to influence change to the constitution which is born out of the fact that media practitioners are being harassed and jailed. “It also creates the legal enabling environment for the media to play its critical role. It also seeks to educate Sierra Leone Media Practitioners” he explained. Mr. Francis Sowa, Lecturer Mass Communications Department at Fourah Bay College (FBC) called on Journalists to focus on their responsibilities. Mr. Sowa said that journalists have the responsibility to check government how responsible and accountable they are to the people.
