Journey Of The Sorcerer by The Eagles --- As a followup to my previous post concerning the theme to The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy (H2G2) 1981 BBC-TV Series, here is the original piece of music that it was adapted/arranged from. Journey Of The Sorcerer is the only pure instrumental track ever recorded by the American rock band The Eagles and can be found on their 1975 album One Of These Nights. The tune was composed by band member Bernie Leadon (b. 19 July 1947). An abridged version of it was used as the theme for the late 1970s BBC Radio H2G2 Series and for a subsequent H2G2 LP. The late British composer-arranger-conductor Tim Souster (29 January 1943 – 1 March 1994) was tasked with creating an adaptation/arrangement of the piece for the H2G2 TV Series. It has been widely reported that Douglas Adams, creator of the H2G2 Universe, chose Journey Of The Sorcerer to be the H2G2 Theme because he liked the futuristic sound of the tune and the interstellar feel that you get when listening to it. In addition, he thought that the use of the banjo as the lead instrument for the piece evoked images of hitchhiking. It was an excellent choice - you cant listen to this music now without thinking of moi (Ford Prefect) and my friends Arthur Dent, Tricia (Trillian Astra) McMillan, Zaphod Beeblebrox and Marvin The Perpetually-Depressed Robot... along with Slartibartfast, Magrathea, The Heart Of Gold, Infinite Improbability Fields, The Restaurant At The End Of The Universe, The Great Prophet Zarquon, Random Dent, Eccentrica Gallumbits, Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters, Ol Janx Spirit, 42, Babel Fish, Towels, Krikkit, Vogons, Ravenous Bugblaater Beasts, etc. etc. on-and-on-and-on ad nauseam. The person who uploaded this video containing Journey Of The Sorcerer to YouTube certainly celebrated the outer-space feeling that you experience by setting the music to a series of fantastic interstellar images.
