Judo is one of the sports that will be played at both the Pan Am and Parapan American Games at TORONTO 2015 Judo was developed from the martial art of jujitsu in Japan in 1882. While the word “judo” may mean “the gentle way,” this is a sport of sudden throws and quick reflexes combined with tests to the limits of balance, flexibility, strategy and mental preparation. Judo has been a Pan Am sport since 1963. Parapan Judo is played by athletes with a visual impairment. Its rules differ slightly from those of Pan Am judo, with the main difference being that the competitors start with a loose grip on each other’s suits, and must maintain contact throughout play.
