Jules Bianchis crash at the Japanese GB in October was not due to - TopicsExpress

Jules Bianchis crash at the Japanese GB in October was not due to Bianchis inability to slow down but, rather the inability of the Fail Safe to be activated by the braking system. The Fail Safe algorithm is designed to over-ride the throttle and cut the engine. This was obstructed by the torque coordinator, which controls the the rear brake by wire (BBW) system. The FIA also found that as a result of the drivers being able to make changes to the BBW system to complement a drivers style, Marussia hadnt broken the rules. However, this is a contributing factor to the Fail Safe not being activated. The FIA are now taking more cautionary measures and tightening the limits to which teams can change the parameters of their BBW. FIA have speculated that as the fail safe had failed to cut the engine torque as requested by the driver may have affected the impact velocity; yet it hasnt been possible to quantify this. However, it may be that Bianchi was distracted by what was happening and the fact that his front wheels had locked, and couldnt steer the car such that it missed the crane. Reports suggest that Bianchi is still unconscious in the hospital with an annoxal head injury. The F1 drivers paid a tribute to Bianchi before the Russian Grand Prix. We hope that he will recover soon.
