July 15, 2011 Dear B__ and N____, First, I have to say what a wonderful privilege it is for Percy to have Ted as a friend. Ted is by far the most tolerable, respectful, thoughtful, and talented of Percy’s friends so far. This is high praise to both of you. I certainly hope that their friendship is sustained for their entire lives. I would love for both Owen and Percy to go to Merced High with Ted and Owen’s close friends, though their mother differs at this point. Both Owen and Percy want to go to Merced High. In any event, Percy already thinks of going to UC-Santa Cruz where I used to teach and still have friends. We toured the campus again this past weekend. I also have close friends in both Santa Cruz and nearby Watsonville. I understand that Ted has a goal to work for Santa Cruz Guitars and, if that comes to pass, Ted and Percy could still pal around with each other. Percy already is thinking of both of them living with my close friends in Watsonville. I will understand if my friends are hesitant (he is a firefighter/paramedic and she is a CPA). To matters close at hand, I would love it if Ted could come with us to a “celebration” of my former scoutmaster and mentor George Wilson on Sunday, July 24th at 5. He recently passed (a note to his family is enclosed). George meant the world to me, particularly when my dad passed in a tragic manner (died at sea) when I was 13. From what I hear, Ted and Percy have already begun writing a tribute instrumental song in George’s honor. I may add my own playing to the cause. The Wilson family is excited about the possibility of their music. We would cram in as many acoustic instruments as possible into the car and hit the road around 2:30 (possibly allowing time to explore the Sonora downtown). I would suspect that we would start back to Merced around 8. It is about 60 miles, but not a straight drive, from Merced. Ted could even spend Sunday night with us on the top bunk so you wouldn’t have to worry about staying up. We would also check in with you regularly so you know what’s going on. I have been assured that there will be outstanding food!!! As far as I know, the Wilson family doesn’t drink and, if so, very moderately. A couple of George’s daughters were close friends of mine growing up. In any event, I told Percy that this would be their first paying “gig”–free Slurpees for a week or so. My car has new brakes, battery, tires, alignment, and more so we are riding in safety. I also have AAA for any emergencies. If possible, please let me know if this is something you’re comfortable with. It would mean a lot to me and others. And no–Andrew is not coming. Best, Keith 201-9450
