June 16th 2013 - Father’s Day celebrations are as poignant and significant in the Youth Charter journey as they are within the streets and communities it serves. This year’s Father’s Day falls on the same day as South Africa’s annual Youth Day celebrations. Marking the 1976 Soweto uprisings, Youth Day has come to represent the recognition of the post apartheid South Africa with a day of sport, culture and arts highlighting the choices that can be made in realizing the potential of the nation’s youth. Even more poignant as we mark the Father of the nation, former President, Nelson Mandela as he recovers from his sick bed, much to the relief of the citizens of the world. As one of Mandela’s key legacies ‘education for all’, the 1996 Youth Day celebrations are of particular note. The Youth Charter was launched in Jo’burg Square and then with President Mandela, joined by the sportsmen and women of South Africa in St. Petersburg, where they would sign the Youth Charter scroll. 17 years on, a Legacy for All has been inspired and developed globally on this special day. May the Father of the nation and a global icon be recognized as the Father of the sport and social and human development for peace movement. A Youth Charter Legacy for All…
