June Poem Cycling to Class The bicycle was my mode of transport it let me go wherever I wanted: the Jardin d’Essais, a Mediterranean Botanical Garden, the Roman ruins across town, the Moroccan city walls thick, majestic and earth red.... The Jardin des Oudaias over the cliffs at the entrance of the Bou Regreg River with its roses resisting the hot sun, the attached Tea Garden of white walls and blue woods. That was pleasure. During the week the bicycle let me get to the College des Orangers, some twenty minutes away. My favorites subject Languages, literature, reading aloud in class. On the way to school, I imagined that I was in England, I had been there. I forced my mind to think only in English. Since I practiced this mental exercise in my two birth languages, one more was easy. Visually I thought of the London ambiance. It was fortunate to have American guests who came for dinner on weekends, who spoke to me in English, my future brother-in-law helped me acquire the type of King’s accent that a young Frenchman could imitate. My bicycle took me where I wanted to go, it was comfortable and light it kept me in shape. Riding the boulevards mostly deserted, I practiced my new language to get me prepared for class.
