Just a reminder everyone! I have had so many people come in lately with low back issues that I wanted to put this information back in the forefront of your memory just in case you or someone you know is having low back issues. * Most low back pain does not originate in the low back at all. In my 14+ years I have found that nine times out of ten the Psoas muscles are the root problem when it comes to low back pain. These muscles connect the anterior (front) of the lumbar spine to the hip. So when you are sitting, squatting, bending over or laying on your side in a fetal position they shorten. Muscles have memory so they will eventually stay shortened after a prolonged period of time of doing any of these things. Therefore when you stand or go to stand the muscles lock up (contract) in order to protect themselves. This then pulls the spine forward causing the lumbar muscles to compress (shorten) due to trying to stabilize your back. The glutes and hip rotators then get in on the action because of the compensation factor and having to help the over strained low back muscles. The trigger points that are in the glutes and hip rotators then become active and that is the majority of your back pain. These active trigger points can refer pain which will mimic sciatica as well as localized hip and low back pain. A great way in determining if you have Psoas issues is if it hurts to stand up after sitting for a while, or if after walking a bit the initial pain subsides or lessens. Also, if you try to walk and a leg cant take the weight of your body, thats from the Psoas too. These are just a couple of characteristics of Psoas issues and can be brought on by almost anything. Therefore stretching (especially these muscles) daily is highly recommended. There are a few really good psoas stretches available that I can show you or if you want to look them up on line. If you have any question about low back pain feel free to contact me. And as always please share this so that someone else might benefit from the information. Thanks and Have a great day!! :)
