Just before I went to bed last night I saw a post by Scott Bomar of the Bo Keys that told me that John Fry had died suddenly. For those of you who dont know John was the owner of Ardent Studios, a Memphis fixture since the 1960s where everyone from Led Zeppelin to the White Stripes have recorded. On a more personal note he was one of the first people I met in Memphis on trips with Ace Records and he always opened the doors of the studio to Alec, Tony and myself allowing us a mid-town base for endless hours of copying tapes. He was also an incredible recording engineer, whose mic placements were second to none. Jim Dickinson once told Alec and I that Big Stars Third sounded like it did because of Johns engineering.
