Just finished Inwoods very short introduction to Martin Heidegger. The question of being is naturally followed by the quality of being which requires considering the possibilities of being. Heidegger considers Dasein (man) authentic (which differentiates it from other entities) only when it constantly thinks about its possibilities of being. If it doesnt, its existence in the world does not qualify for being. In other words, if man constantly doesnt think about its possibilities in life, he is no different than a cat or a hammer: and that, for Dasein, is death (no being). I was always skeptical of philosophers but found this way of seeing the human life and its consequences very interesting.
