Just finished my sermon for tomorrow. Here is my outline. Living Water The Rev. Robert F. Haskell March 23, 2014 John 4:4-42 What is living water? 1. It is a surprise. The woman had no expectations of anything from Jesus She was a Samaritan (v9), a woman (v27), a moral outcast (v18) His living water is not given on the basis of merit, gender, race, money, morality, or religious practice It is grace, a gift, free o We need to know that Jesus can reach us and our unlikely friends and relatives. It has nothing to do with who we are 2. It is ultimate satisfaction The disciples may have seen people die of thirst Jesus offers ‘living water’ (v10), ‘forever’ water (v14) ‘I have something your soul needs more than your body needs water’ If you drink salt water, you will die faster than if you drink nothing If you trust your soul to anything else: family, politics, beauty, love, a career, hobbies, sports, you die faster, spiritually ‘I can give you spiritual purpose that will have love bubbling through’ 3. You need to bring to him all the things you are trusting in She wants ‘running water’ (v15) He says, ‘Go, call your husband’ (v16) She was trying to fulfill her needs with men ‘You don’t need to create faith, you need to transfer it’ Someplace you are drinking deep. You need to identify where it is And bring it to Jesus: ‘I am he’ (v26) 4. Jesus can supply our thirst At his ‘hour’ (v23) the hour of his death he died of thirst ‘I thirst’ – John 19:28 Jesus died of thirst so that we might have the cool living water of God Ask him to give you living water (v15)
