Just finished reading Indu Sundaresans book ,The mountain of light (set in Maharaja Ranjt Singhs reign). Bothered by the fact that in this one, as in the more celebrated The twentieth wife (about empress Noorjahan) people are downing milk tea at chai shops in Mughal India and smoking beedis. Didnt commercial tea drinking start in the early 20th century in India, after the Tea board was set up in1902? Wh en did we start smoking? Lots of hukkahs in later Mughal art, but when did we start smoking beedis? The Tendu grows indigeneously in India, so how old is the dhumrapaan tradition?
