Just got off the phone with my beautiful mum, wishing her a happy English mother’s day. Wish I could be there in person to give her a big hug for all she has done for our family. My mum always had a part time job to boost our family income but NEVER seemed absent. As a kid I thought those jobs were just to give us little extras, but later learned that sometimes they were to put food on the table when my dad was between self employed building jobs or waiting for a client to pay their bill. Mum sacrificed so much to make sure us kids didn’t go without. We were not overindulged or spoilt but boy did we feel rich! My dad once explained to me that we were working class and not middle class as I thought, which was hard for me to except as our lives as kids were so comfortable. But looking back, it wasn’t money; it was love and security that made us feel that way. Always a home cooked meal at the end of the day and homemade cakes and pies that would give Jamie Oliver a run for his money! Always a shoulder to cry on when needed as well as a disciplinarian when necessary. My mum’s personality was more shy and introvert and even though she worried, she never discouraged her strong willed and independent daughter. Even when it meant me moving half way across the world to marry a man she hardly new! My mum and I were not best friends growing up; we didnt hang out together or swap clothes or makeup. Our roles as mother and daughter were well defined. She was mum and I loved it that way. But today as a mother myself I find we have so much in common and I am proud to call my mum my best friend, but still honored to have her as my mum.
